Discovery & Emphasize
Designing for existing customers with minimal adoption and learning curve for users.
We were fortunate to have had a solid customer base and proven products for this project. Our main goal was to enhance features for these customers within a tight timeline, as this project was crucial for our revenue. Our UX strategy prioritized engineering needs, understanding that design decisions required trade-offs. The big question for our team was: How could we make smart design choices and create effective plans to build a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) efficiently?
🔎  Research
Understanding on-premises businesses in HPE and their users.
To kick off the project, our focus was on aligning project expectations and gathering all necessary information to validate decisions.
What is On-premise
On-premise hosting is like managing your applications and infrastructure offline, within your own office or data centers. This setup gives you direct control over hardware, networking, and security without needing external cloud services. Organizations choose on-premise hosting for tight control over data, security, and compliance, and it doesn't rely on constant internet connection for internal operations.
Business opportunity to provide our on-prem customers with a better operational solution.
HPE's current "Cloud-only" services may not meet the needs of highly secure government and financial organizations, resulting in missed opportunities or expensive custom setups. Depending solely on cloud capabilities leaves a gap for customers requiring completely disconnected solutions. Waiting for large deals to fund secure or disconnected offerings is impractical.
Define problem
Transitioning between different products, jump between two environments (cloud and on-premises).
For on-prem platform admins to accomplish tasks, they must navigate between different products and functions, toggling between two environments: cloud and on-premises.

‍
We were interested in understanding:
  • What distinguishes the on-premises experiences?
  • Which features or operations may pose greater complexity or challenge to manage?
🔎  Research
Identify the gap and friction in their onboarding and set up process
We begin by examining day 0 to day 1, when users establish their network. Next, we assess their initial experiences and challenges upon entering the platform.
↓User Journey
Take away
The current experience requires users to switch between different product brands, interfaces, and navigation styles.
  • Seeking a solution to enhance the transition from cloud, providing a more seamless experience with fewer obstacles for future enhancements.
  • Seeking a solution to simplify the discovery and utilization of essential day 0 configurations, particularly those commonly used during setup.
  • Seeking a solution to unite teams and eliminate redundant tasks between on-premises and cloud environments, creating a simpler and clearer workflow for all.
Design
Unified on-premises management for simplified operations
In this release, we aimed to deliver on-premises management capabilities, including performance monitoring, certificate management, lifecycle management, troubleshooting, backup, and notifications. By leveraging the platform solution, we achieved a single pane of glass for simplified operations and faster adoption.
✍️  Planning
Prioritizing features, engaging with dependencies, reconciling concerns, and addressing disconnects between products.
Since the product was new, the team was still establishing a rhythm for productivity, ensuring we were helpful and accountable in decision-making as everyone learned together.
↓We have lots of features to deliver quickly, so staying organized helps stakeholders leave reviews at different times.
Propose scalable design solutions and goals for general availability.
In addition to the tasks and epics assigned to us, we aimed to ensure that our design was future-proof for at least one Program Increment ahead. This enabled us to gain a better understanding of the product lifecycle and initiate conversations earlier, resulting in a more robust product strategy.
Implementation
Unified on-premises management for simplified operations
This platform consolidates system tasks into one accessible tab, simplifying complexity and leveraging familiar page structures to ease the learning curve, providing a seamless platform experience.
